Automobile sales mean money to manufacturers. To consumers, sales mean a number of things. Which cars are the most popular in the U.S.? Which ones are the most reliable? The two can go hand-in-hand, as unreliable vehicles tend to fall out of consumer favor very quickly. East Coast EuroWerks lists the top five European automobiles sold in the U.S. at the end of last year. These brands continue to dominate the European auto market on our side of the pond.
1. BMW
Germany’s BMW took the top spot in the fourth quarter of 2020. There was a total of 98,750 BMWs sold from October to December in the U.S., and one reason why it may have claimed the number one spot is that the largest BMW manufacturer is right here in the States; in South Carolina to be exact. The manufacturing plant employs about 11,000 people.
2. Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz took second place in 2020 fourth-quarter sales. This luxury brand sold a total of 95,310 from October to December. Many people still love the luxury a Benz offers, and the company is also trying to appeal to a younger demographic with more affordable options on the market. This is sure to please those on a tighter budget.
3. Volkswagen
Germany’s Volkswagen is extremely popular. The company’s Beetle has been popular for decades and people still drive around in old VW vans. New VWs sold in the U.S. in 2020 from October to December total 94,122. Compact and efficient, VWs make excellent first cars for teen drivers, and for those looking for a fuel-efficient compact car.
4. Audi
You’ve probably noticed more Audis on the roads lately. This is because this European manufacturer is gaining in popularity in the States. Audi’s fourth-quarter 2020 sales topped off at 62,519, which isn’t bad considering most people flock toward the top three manufacturers on our list. Audi is a subsidiary of the Volkswagen group.
5. Volvo
Another excellent first car for teens is Volvo. This Swedish automaker is known for the safety of its vehicles. In fact, it breaks safety boundaries and other automobile manufacturers follow helplessly behind. A total of 36,526 Volvos sold in the U.S. during 2020’s fourth quarter, which means there are 36,526 safer drivers on the road.
