What Makes Volvo the Safest Cars on the Road?

Volvo has always had a reputation for being safe. Many parents buy their teens Volvos as their first cars for this exact reason. East Coast EuroWerks services and repairs Volvo automobiles. What makes them so safe? Well, to start, Volvo has been ahead of the game when it comes to safety technology. It also scores consistently high on the NHTSA crash tests. Let’s talk about this Swedish automotive brand.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration

For years, Volvo automobiles have received the top score – five stars – in the NHTSA’s tests. Volvos are designed to protect the vehicles’ occupants in the event of any accident type, whether hit from behind, head-on, or in the side. Most Volvo models also receive IIHS Top Safety Pick awards. This is an award separate from the NHTSA testing that is given by the nonprofit Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Volvo’s Safety Innovations

  • Three-point seatbelt in the 1950s that is lap and shoulder belt we have today
  • Rear-facing child seat, which it designed and produced in 1972
  • Child booster seats in 1976, which have been integrated into back seats since 1990
  • Whiplash protection in 1998 to help prevent the most common accident injury
  • Side-impact protection in 1991 that included side-curtain inflatable bags
  • SUV run-off protection to prevent driving off the road and rolling
  • Enhanced rollover protection in 2002 with a roll stability control system
  • Stronger roof structure to prevent cave-in in the event of a rollover
  • Blind spot system in 2003 that warns drivers of vehicles in the blind spots
  • Low-speed emergency braking system in 2008 to prevent rear-end collisions
  • Pedestrian detection system in 2010 to prevent pedestrian and bicycle collisions
  • Connected safety system recently to warn drivers of hazards on the roads ahead

Many of the driver assistance systems on vehicles today were started by Volvo. They created the technology, introduced it in their vehicles, and fine-tuned it to perfection. This is why Volvo continues to produce the safest vehicles on the roads today, and why other vehicle manufacturers who rank high on the safety ratings have implemented Volvo-inspired technology.
